In 1780 John Rice came from Dover, England and settled near Roanoke, VA. He served in the American Revolution (Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown on October 17, 1781). According to family tradition, John Rice was killed near Roanoke by native Americans in a raid on white settlers.
