Benjamin Franklin Rice, Jr. was born north of Carey, OH on January 6, 1942. He lived in Carey until graduating high school in 1960, then moved to Chicago to attend DeVry Technical Institute. He married Judith Ann Rames December 21, 1963. Leslie Joan was born January 27, 1965. Ben Sr. died August 11, 1965, and in Spring 1966 they moved to Ohio to help Ruby adjust. Ben started working for the Northern Ohio Telephone Co on June 7, 1966, and they rented a farm house east of Bowling Green before buying a house at 134 Lehman Avenue, then another at 117 Byall Avenue. Julie was born August 28, 1968. Ben and Judy divorced in 1971, and Ben was awarded the house, the car and the kids. Ben and Kathleen “Kate” Ellen McCrea were married January 15, 1972 in the living room of Kate’s parents, Jim and Betty McCrea, at 264 Margaret Place in Perrysburg, OH.
In 1975, Ben was transferred from Bowling Green to Gibsonburg, OH. In September, Ben and Kate bought 101 E. First Street, Woodville OH where they lived for the next 42 years. Ben transferred back to Bowling Green (company now known as GTE) in the early 1980’s , then in 1993 was elected Business Manager/Financial Secretary of I.B.E.W. Local 986, representing GTE employees. He re-elected in 1993 and 1999, then retired in 2002. He and Kate moved to 1281 Tiffany Circle South in Palm Springs, CA in late 2015, where they currently reside.

Benjamin Franklin Rice and Ruby Mae Conley were married December 21, 1938 by Rev. Cludy in the parsonage of a church in Tiffin OH. Rev. Cludy’s daughter served as witness. Ruby said they didn’t tell anyone for two or three days because she had always wanted to be secretly married. They both came from Eastern KY with their families between 1936 and 1938. Except for about two years during WWII when they lived in Baltimore, MD where Ben worked as a welder in the shipyards, they lived in Carey, OH the rest of their lives.

According to the Frank and Rosa Caudill book, Charles Jackson Rice was known as Black Jack (? Verify he was ALSO Black Jack/as a child?) because he had black curly hair. After leaving Riceville, he was known as Charlie. In 1926, he and his first wife Dessie were living in Omar, WV where he was working as a contractor. She fell ill and a week later died of acidosis on July 29, 1926. She was 38 years old and pregnant with her 10th child. Two children had proceeded her in death. She is buried in the Trimble Gap Cemetery in Ivyton, KY. Some time later, Charles moved his family to Ashland, KY. For a short time in the early 1950s he lived in Carey, Ohio with his oldest son Raleigh. When he died he was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery next to Josephine W. Rice who is likely his second wife. His third wife was Elizabeth Price; his obituary states ‘surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Patrick Rice, Ashland five sons’, who were then listed.

According to the Frank and Rosa Caudill book, Benjamin Franklin Rice married Emily Jane May on October 13, 1870. On February 7, 1879 Ben’s father deeded him a tract of land on Long Fork. Ben and Emily built a log house the property. With the exception of five or six months spent in South Point, Ohio the rest of their lives were spent on this farm and in this house. Ben was baptized in the Liberty Baptist Church organized in 1884 and a charter member of the Riceville Baptist Church organized in 1907. Ben was buried in the Trimble Gap Cemetery in Ivyton; his wife Emily, their infant daughter and son Willie are also buried there.

There is a tradition in the Rice Family that John Rice Jr. was captured as a young man by some native Americans who took him to their camps in Tennessee to make music for them. They later released him and he returned to his home, which was said to be near Roanoke, VA. He later came to Kentucky with his two brothers and a sister and settled in Letcher County before moving to Beaver Creek. While still a young man, he moved to Johnson County, KY on March 16, 1815 and settled at the head of Jenny’s Creek. It is said he was a great old time fiddler and made several trips to Tennessee on missions to make music. In so doing, he went by the way of the Cumberland Gap, where he met and married Nancy Davis, the daughter of John Davis. They first lived on Middle Creek then moved to Jenny’s Creek, where they are buried. As of 1837, According to Floyd County tax records, John Rice II owned 350 acres of land and 4 head of cattle, and had 4 slaves.

In 1780 John Rice came from Dover, England and settled near Roanoke, VA. He served in the American Revolution (Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown on October 17, 1781). According to family tradition, John Rice was killed near Roanoke by native Americans in a raid on white settlers.
